If you've made it to this blog, there's probably only one thing on your mind.
"Really? Sci-Fy Is for Lovers? What the heck does that mean?"
Or you're just thinking about last night's Daily Show episode. But you may also be wondering what is up with my title. So here's my explanation:
1) Sci-Fy stands for science fiction and fantasy. Yes the classical shortening is sci-fi, and there's a TV network called SyFy. I chose scify because well, fantasy has a ' y ' in it, and it's less likely to get mistyped because an ' i ' follows it in the blog title. And yes, I reserve the right to use the hyphen or not as I like for purely aesthetic reasons.
2) It's called Sci-Fy is for Lovers for two reasons. The first is that the science fiction and fantasy genres lend themselves naturally to a devoted fanbase. People are passionate about their favorite scify shows, and will fight tooth and nail to keep them alive when the ratings begin to sink. Fans know every episode, every back-story, and often the sign of a good show is how much the cast and crew interact with fans. Though casual watching is of course acceptable, the scify community is built on people who truly love what media they take in.
3) The other reason I use the phrase "lovers" is because of the [what I consider sexist and misogynistic] view that the growing presence of women in the scify community is watering down the hardcore-ness of scify and forcing (read 'against the [male] fans wills') the presence of more relationships, both romantic and sexual. (If you've never heard this viewpoint before, good for you. It's mostly done by whiny male bloggers who don't like that girls are now playing in their clubhouse) Scify is, and will continue to be, a constant battelfield of the ideas that fill the rest of the world on romance (Can true love exist, and if it is, is it really worth it?), sex (How important is virginity? Is non-committal sex evil?), and even sexual identity: homo-, bi-, and even omni-sexual characters have a more accepted place in scify than in any other societally accepted media. It's becoming a crucial feature of scify to explore these topics, and one I hope to discuss and debate with my readers.
And in case you're wondering "omni-sexual" refers to someone who has sex with aliens. I learned that in reference to Captain Jack Harkness from the Doctor Who and Torchwood series. The more you know.
Hobey ho, let's go.
